As my granny gears failed me and I struggled up a steep incline on an empty mountain road, I drew the attention of a passing vanlife couple. The wife, who was a heart surgeon in Istanbul and spoke fluent English, jumped out and offered me food and beer, and soon I was feasting on homemade dolmas, bread, and a stew of cruciferous veggies. At this point, I had no idea where I was going, so I was happy to accept their advice and head for Iznik, which she described as a comfortable beach town, but also turned out to be historically significant (as I would later learn from a parenthetical note on a highway sign).
