On January 1, after spending the night at Rifugio Bonatti, I went snowshoeing along the trail to Rifugio Bertone. Partway along, I lost my footing and ended up falling down the mountainside about 35m, where I hit a tree. I then continued falling another 15m to get to a flat place, where I was able to call some friends from Hotel Croux with my GPS coordinates so that they could organize a helicopter rescue. When the rescue services arrived, I had hypothermia. At the hospital, the doctors discovered I had six broken ribs, a grade 3 liver laceration and a punctured/collapsed lung. I feel incredibly lucky to be alive - my Suunto helped save my life. Without my GPS coordinates, the helicopter might not have found me in time.
