Super flow!! This went so smoothly - I was nervous about the “thunderstorms” weather forecast and altitude having only spent my time around 2000/2400m in the last week with one slow hike to 4100m the week before in Uganda (but great for endurance). Dowsed myself during the days proceeding with local Kenyan milk tea in the style of Tibetan belief that drinking tea and milk originating from high altitude helps you adjust quicker and avoid altitude sickness. Can’t speak as to the science of this, but it’s never failed. Not even the slightest headache all the way up to near 5000m! (To be fair I was also pouring water down myself 12hrs before start).

The altitude felt just great, some surprising class III moves near the summit took the edge off the heart-rate and breathing and were a welcome distraction. The summit came faster than I expected (usually not the case when up so high)! Overall very fast until the last 700m gravelly ascent. Sadly dropped my guide 1km past the start so had to navigate myself (he had stomach issues) but thank goodness for my Coros watch map and other hikers on the trail.

Wish I could have spent more time on the peak. Could have looked at those views for ages but was trying to get this record. Made it to the peak just under 3hrs, something like 2:57, which I was thrilled about! (And is also a record, my guide held the previous at around 4:30).

The way down started out more technical and slippery than I would have liked, then was depressingly rolling, and finally found some serious flow cushy trail down past 4000m. 

Overall brought way too much food, but just enough liquid - 1L of water and 1L of random Kenyan energy drink. Perfect weather, glad I started early. Last 300m descent was over 5km of rolling dusty road and I dropped a 3:55km in there with achy adrenaline legs to celebrate!

Perfect day. Went by way too fast, but I guess that’s how you want it. Was basically in flow state the whole time. What a dream run. 

As I write this, still waiting for my guide and driver who sadly thought I was going to run 3-5hrs slower than I did. A monkey stole my bread. I guess my kids won’t see this glacier so glad I did.
