Things were pretty smooth and uneventful for the majority of the ride.  The towpath is dead flat and there's not a lot of variety of scenery so the miles just tick by once you get in a rhythm.  The trail was a little damp for the first 30mi or so but after that it was dry and fast for at least 100mi.  For the last 30mi, the gravel got distinctly rougher which was a very unwelcome change after 150+ miles of wear and tear on my hands and back.  But at that point, I could tell I was going to be close to the 10 hour mark so that brought some motivation back.  With 9mi to go, I smashed my rear wheel into a rain rut that I didn't see until the last second.  There was a ~5mm hole in my tire that wouldn't quite seal and I ended up fiddling with it for way too long.  I finally got it to seal with the help of a tubeless plug, but that spelled the end of getting under 10 hours.  Once I got back on the bike, the adrenaline of trying to break 10 hours had worn off and the pain in my legs and back really set in after being hunched over trying to fix the flat for 10 minutes, so I rode the last 9mi in easy knowing that I still had the FKT in the bag.
