Marshall Mesa & Dowdy Draw

If you’re in the mood for more rolling terrain as opposed to scaling a mountain summit, then your best bet is to head to the Marshall Mesa trailhead. This high plains area offers more mellow hills than you might find elsewhere in Boulder, making this a favorite with runners of all levels. The gentle terrain is crisscrossed with runnable single track and double track. There are several options from Marshall Mesa to run different loops. Our favorite includes the Dowdy Draw trail, which will take you through grasslands dotted with ponderosa pines, scrub brush, and wildflowers. From here you will have excellent views of both the Rocky Mountains and the Eastern Plains. Be careful at the two road crossings on this route. With Eldorado Canyon and the Flatirons as your backdrop, you will probably want to make a few Instagram stops along the way. The trails here are mostly exposed so if the weather is warm, a morning or evening run will be your best bet to avoid the heat. Sunrises create an amazing pink glow against the rocky Front Range that is not to be missed.
