The Sea Cliff Bridge Return is a must-ride Wollongong classic, combining scenic coastal roads, rolling terrain, and one of Australia’s most iconic cycling landmarks. At just under 50 km, it’s the perfect ride for a brisk morning session or a relaxed weekend cruise—always with the ocean by your side.
Rolling out from Wollongong, you head north along the coast through a string of seaside suburbs and beaches. The early kilometres are a mix of flat sections and gentle rises, with the sea breeze and sound of the waves setting the tone. After passing through Thirroul, the landscape opens up and the anticipation builds for the day’s highlight: the Sea Cliff Bridge.
This engineering marvel stretches gracefully over the ocean, offering sweeping views along the Illawarra coastline. Riding it is pure joy—smooth tarmac, dramatic cliffs to one side, and sparkling water to the other. The northern turnaround point comes after a few more rolling kilometres past Scarborough and Clifton, with short but punchy climbs to keep the legs honest.
The return trip retraces your route south, giving you another chance to soak in the bridge views and enjoy the coastal descents. Back in Wollongong, you’ll finish with a sense of having ticked off one of NSW’s most picturesque and accessible rides.
