A quintessential Tuscan landscape provides your
backdrop today: well‐tended vineyards, olive groves,
oak woodland, and lots of ups and downs. Along the
way you'll have opportunities to experience some of
Chianti's most beloved towns, starting with ridgetop
Radda. In 1415, Radda became the capital of the
L'Antica Lega del Chianti (The Chianti League) and is
still known as a center for Chianti Classico wine
production. Explore town on foot for a close‐up look
at a variety of architectural styles, including Classical
Medici villas and homes constructed from castle ruins.
Fuel up with a mid‐morning caffe then hop on your
bike for a short ride along a rolling ridgeline.
Our next stop is Castellina, an enchanting hillside
village with a commanding view of the Pesa, Arbia and
Elsa River Valleys. Castellina served as a Florentine
army outpost until the fall of Siena in 1555, and its
military past can be seen in its old ramparts, fortress
and arcaded walkway, Via delle Volte. Stroll the
picturesque main thoroughfare, scouting out the
perfect spot for lunch on your own. Afterward, there
are plenty of gelato options. In need of a new biking
jersey? Now's your chance to get one emblazoned
with the Gallo Nero ("Black Rooster"), the ubiquitous
logo for Chianti Classico wines.
If you're ready for some downtime at the hotel, get a lift in the van. Otherwise, hop on your bike for an
exhilarating downhill past neat rows of Sangiovese
vineyards. You'll undoubtedly notice the striking
architecture along our route: Chianti's strict building
limitations mean that most structures look as they
have for centuries. Continue on to the family‐owned
Ceramiche Rampini, a great place to check out—and
purchase—ceramics hand‐painted in the Renaissance
tradition. Then return to our hotel through the Chianti
forest. Or if you've still got energy to burn, take on the
Monteluco Challenge, a well‐known training climb for
local cyclists.
Tonight we savor a farewell dinner at our hotel's cozy
restaurant and toast an unforgettable week. Buon
appetito! Lodging: Villa Curina Resort
