This is the third time I have taken the shuttle across the Richmond San Rafael Bridge, and as luck would have it, each time I had Michael as my driver. There are only two shuttles that go back and forth across the bridge every 25 minutes. Michael and I have had a nice chat about cycling and this time he asked me to guess what he did over the weekend. I said had no clue and he said he bought a bike. He paid $75 for a used Trek. He said he spent the day on Saturday riding around Alameda and Oakland and around Lake Merritt. He said he had a great time, but wanted to know how to avoid his sore butt. I explained the first thing he needs to get is some cycling shorts with a chamois for some cushioning. And he asked me about what the contraption was on my handlebars. I explained that it was a gps enabled computer that can be used to track your rides or for navigation on predetermined routes. He said he was inspired to start  riding a bike because of his interaction with cyclists in this job. If you take the shuttle and get Michael as your driver, be sure to ask him to play “The Sweetest Taboo” by the British soft rock group, Sade, from his play list. He likes mellow music. I joked that I had stopped paying attention to popular music when Jimmy Hendricks died, he laughed and gave me a fist bump. I’m sure Hendricks died way before Michael was born. I do like his taste in music and I seem to have helped bring another cyclist into the world.
