To complement, not contrast what I wrote yesterday, here is a route designed just because I wanted to ride it. Partly to see the Christmas lights in Forcalquier (turns out there is also a huge Christmas market too) and partly because there was less of a 'training' focus to this one.

Having a structured approach to whatever sport you enjoy doesn't mean foregoing the fun bits. In face, it's more about facilitating having a good time. Some also like the focus, routine and accountability that training with some structure brings.

In this fashion, each ride should have a purpose. But that purpose need not be a specific performance outcome. Riding simply for fun should be part of the balance and must be included in a sustainable schedule.

It shouldn't be about 'depriving' oneself of fun and 'suffering' through the aspects with more of a training focus either. These should be rewarding in themselves and never so hard that you dread doing them. That ain't productive. Plus, fitness gains are an enabler to controlling ones own effort for any ride.

Anyway, I get bored after too long without a focus or a broader plan. As Seneca famously said:

"If a person knows not to which port they sail, no wind is favorable"
