2025 was a weird year. My main takeaway is that hard work counts for something, but luck is 80% of it.

Three accomplishments: I published a book, I ran a fast marathon, and I received a job offer from Kalshi.

Many failures: I got fired from my old job, I gave my college ex another chance, I was rejected by tons of employers, I ran a dozen mediocre races, I lost all platforms to publish sports journalism, and my book went nowhere.

It’s easy to isolate any one of these and describe the actor using very strong terms. Brilliant for working at Kalshi! A moron for getting canned by a second tier trading firm! Talented for running 2:36! Talentless for running 16:30 off 20 hours per week of training!

My view is that so much is outside of my control. As Nassim Taleb recounted in Fooled By Randomness, this frustrates me. I understand why so many people give up.

Whatever wins and losses lie ahead in 2026, it is an immense privilege to be able to keep trying.
