But unfortunately it was closed! Because of the holiday the mountain is incredibly busy. Especially within a kilometer of the cable cars. I found a trail on the Topo map and decided to check it out!

I was warned that it was "too dangerous" but actually it felt safer. Although the steps were steeper they hadn't been iced over. The trail went straight down the mountain to a beautiful river. It must have been a lot of work to build all of those stone stairs!

Unfortunately the bridge across the river was clearly closed. It looked passable but it's one thing to take an old trail and another to go around a closed sign. So I went back up the mountain, unfortunately that meant I couldn't climb Tiantai again. But that's OK - I just took my time on another hike around the valley.

Ive been inside of almost every temple now. Or at least it feels like it! I need to study up on Buddhism and Buddhist motifs so I can better understand, and respect, those spaces. I know a little, like don't step on the step in the doorway or linger by the entrance. But there is clearly much more to learn!

Sonny, who I met yesterday, took me out to dinner. It was very kind of her! I've been eating at the same little buffet place for every meal so it was a nice change.
