A kāhu plucks away at a dead rabbit, a pod of pūkeko scatter into the drainage gully beside the road. Above, the sky is a darkening grey. The near-black clouds clap together and rumble deeply as they fly off menacingly towards Tutamoe. My new steed glides across the gravel floor with ease. The forest side roads I'd hoped to sneak into are off limits, with all sorts of private land warnings attached to thick, locked gates, so I continue to burn up the road, which soon becomes overgrown with grass. Then mud. I keep climbing, winding the rubber band up, knowing it can only make a fun return. And it does. Did I mention, I LOVE having a bike again?
