My dear Ezio Valente,
You were the most beautiful Italian soul I’ve ever known – a true friend, a proud storyteller, and the warmest grandfather anyone could dream of having.
With your bright eyes and that unmistakable Italian passion, you carried life in every word, every gesture. You spoke of me to everyone as if I were your own: “If I had a daughter, she would be just like her – strong, fearless, riding through the world on her bicycle.”
You fought so bravely against that tumour, never losing your smile, your hope, or your light. Even when it took your strength, it could never take your heart.
You filled rooms with your laughter, with stories of art, of love, of simple joys. Your hands created beauty, your heart gave it away freely. And to me, you gave something priceless: the feeling of family, of being truly cherished.
Today, as I rode alone in training, the road felt different. The silence was heavy at first, but then I felt you. I heard your voice: “One day, cara mia, when I’m better… I will ride with you.”
That promise carried me today. I pedalled harder, breathed deeper, smiled through tears – because I was riding for both of us.
I miss you every day, my Italian nonno. I miss your voice, your hugs, the way you said my name with such pride and tenderness.
But I know you’re at peace now, free from pain, watching over me with that same loving smile.
Thank you, Ezio, for loving me like family.
Thank you for believing in me.
Thank you for being my light.
I will keep riding, keep living, keep making you proud.
Ti voglio tanto bene, nonno mio.
You will live in my heart forever.
Until we ride together one day, in some beautiful place beyond.
