Perhaps this hybrid training schedule isn’t as bad as I thought. This was a great interval session and I identified some improvements that I can make in classic racing. The drive up was fast and easy. It was -6 degrees in Tabernash and around 0 in the parking lot, but it warmed up quickly. I shuffled out to last week’s race start on my B skis, carrying the race skis. There still isn’t enough snow to safely get out to Zone C. But, once there, the conditions are great- clean snow and good tracks. 

I split ~11:18, 11:19 and 11:13 to the top. I increased my tempo noticeably from the race last week on the Blue Ridge portion and that made it much easier to stay in L3. I ran the first hill on Young in the tracks instead of striding it. That put me into L4, and then I sustained that over the top of the second hill before the descent. I bounded the steep hill at the bottom of Young. There were no tracks and it was fairly scoured, so the extra kick afforded by bounding was necessary. The variation of techniques is something I can certainly do in the next several classic races. I saw Kenny, Emily, Elizabeth, both Andrews, Nathan, some CU & DU skiers….this is really the place to be right now.
