2020 Spring Marathon W13D06/090: 20 LSD miles.

The last race of the 2019-20 winter doubled up as the last outing for my first pair of Salomon S/Race Skin 201 Classic skis … as they pass the baton to their 196 cousins for the 2020-21 winter. Taking into account everything Mother Nature sent our way over the past 36-48 hours, our Swedetown groomers did a pretty awesome job of setting the classic tracks and skate lanes. I believed that the relatively slower conditions than originally predicted/expected would favor my strength.

Mixed with three inexplicable tumbles including one only few meters from the finish line, the final time was 2:07:55. Though good for  59/131 overall, 43/87 in gender and 5/11 in AG, it was well beyond the A (1:45-1:50), B (1:50-1:55) and C (1:55-2:00) goals I had in mind for the event and thought was possible. Wax recommendation and wax job were fine but taking time to test (and re-adjust) the Turnamic binding system to gain a bit more glide might have made some difference.

Without the timely but ‘beyond the call of duty’ kind of help from the Handler-Starks-Hill healthcare system (curing the crud and fatigue, relieving the muscle soreness from a week of hard running, and priming the ski-relevant muscle groups), today’s hard effort would have felt very tiring and the finish time would have told a very different story. As if getting to spend this lovely day with family of friends from near and far wasn’t enough, finding out that my strength might actually lie in faster conditions was a silver lining … on this cloudless day!
