The Mount Desert Island Marathon has been voted the “Most Scenic & Runner-up Best Overall Marathon” by Runner’s World, and “Best Marathon in the Northeast” by Competitor Magazine, and is quickly gaining world-wide attention!

The Marathon and Team Relay start on Main Street in Bar Harbor, and head south winding between between Champlain and Dorr Mountains, thru the village of Otter Creek, along the shore in Seal Harbor with views of Bunker Ledge, Bear Island, Sutton Island and Cranberry Isles. After running thru downtown Northeast Harbor (site of the Half-Marathon start, which follows the same route to finish in Southwest Harbor), the course turns north on to historic Sargeant Drive and follows the edge of breathtaking Somes Sound, the only natural fjord on the US east coast. The race route continues north toward Somesville, the first village on MDI settled in 1761, where it turns west and follows the picturesque Main Street with views of Somes Harbor and the Old Mill Pond on one side, and the famous memorial white bridge on the other. After departing the village the course turns south again and follows a final hilly 10K with views of Echo Lake, Beech Mountain and Norwood Cove before descending down to the finish line Southwest Harbor.
