we head out of town in a North Westerly direction passing through the boroughs of Herringthorpe and Parkgate.Leaving the industrial landscape behind we carry on to Elsecar and then climb up to Hoyland, the gateway to the rolling verdant hills of the East Pennines. We pass through the small hamlet of Pilley before crossing the M1 twice and then approach the first and longest climb of the ride. This is Lowe Lane at Stainborough rising 88m over 1KM with an average gradient of almost 9%. Upon reaching the summit you will be rewarded with magnificent views and a profound sense of achievement. We proceed on quiet country lanes to our cafe stop, the Countess Tea Rooms at Wortley. English breakfast, cake and scones are available and payment is with card or cash.
Our return journey home takes us up Hermit Hill aptly named for the solitude this ascent demands with laboured breathing being the sole companion. It's now pretty much all downhill via Harley and Wentworth before our final "warm down" climb up Brecks Lane.
The ascent on this ride is almost 1100m and we will move at a comfortable pace and not leave anyone floundering. It might be added that there is also 1100m of descent.
