This route takes us up Royds Moor and then South through Todwick, Harthill, Spinkhill and Staveley. We carry on up to Sutton Scardale famous for it's old Hall. Sadly this is a derelict ruin which is now under the care of English Heritage. It once rivalled Chatsworth in splendour before being asset stripped around 100 years ago with much of its contents, oak panelling and even roof being shipped to America. The village of Palterton and Bolsover Castle are easily viewed across the valley and there is a rapid descent which sets riders up nicely for the main challenge of this route. This is Carr Lane Hillclimb which is 1.48Km and averages 7% with a maximum gradient of 13.9%. The cafe stop is 2 miles from Palterton at Bolsover Castle (cash and cards accepted).Homebound is along quiet country lanes through Whaley and Elmton eventually descending on Packman lane to Kiveton Park Station. A section of the road at the lower end of Packman is in a POOR STATE OF REPAIR SO TAKE CARE HERE.We return back to base via Dinnington,Laughton and upper Whiston and a welcome descent down Guilthwaite Hill.
