You can’t avoid running hills here at the aptly named Windy Hill Open Space Preserve. And don’t forget about the wind you will undoubtedly encounter when you reach the top of the ridge. But, on a clear day the panoramic views from the top are unbeatable, you can even see the ocean. If you are up for the challenge, you can make a 7 to 9 mile loop here using any of the three trails that go up and down between the bottom of the park along Alpine Road and the top of the park along Skyline Blvd. The Spring Ridge Trail is an exposed fire road that may be a good option if you want to warm up in the sun. The two shaded single-track trails, Hamms Gulch and Razorback Ridge that are featured in this route, stretch well over two miles and over 1000 feet in elevation. Bring your own water, as there is no drinking water at the trailheads. Try not to fall in love with this wooded oasis and its babbling brooks, Spanish moss, and spectacular views.
