One of the many benefits of life in the suburbs of Chicago is access to a vast network of trail systems. The Illinois Prairie Path (IPP) extends over 60 miles in Cook, DuPage and Kane counties. The IPP was the first “rail-to-trail” project in the U.S. and spurred many similar projects across the country. The Main Stem of the trail connects Maywood, at its eastern end, to Wheaton, and then splits into two branches, one going north to Elgin and the other south to Aurora. These branches intersect the Fox River Trail in Kane County. The Great Western trail also connects with the IPP along the Elgin Branch and the Main Stem. The soft surface of the crushed limestone and convenient mile-marker signage make the IPP a great place for a run. If you are training for a marathon you can run for miles and miles down this flat trail enjoying a variety of scenery including wooded areas, backyards, shopping centers and office parks. Our route starts at the zero mile-marker in downtown Wheaton; from here you can journey down any of the three branches of the IPP. The IPP has several drinking fountains along the path and restrooms can be found in the adjacent parks.
