In the city, the best way to add hills to your run is to conquer one of the many bridges of New York. The iconic Brooklyn Bridge is the most obvious choice if you are starting in Brooklyn or downtown Manhattan. Of course a lot of tourists are thinking the same thing! So if you don’t want to dodge throngs of tourists you need to start bright and early. Regardless, always pay attention for cyclists and stay out of the bike lane or you risk being run over. The pedestrian path on the Brooklyn Bridge is elevated above the roadway, which gives you unbeatable views up and down the East River. Return across the Manhattan Bridge, the elegant next-door neighbor to the Brooklyn Bridge. The Manhattan offers a grittier experience as the walkway is located underneath the traffic and trains. Many runners prefer the Manhattan Bridge because the pedestrian and cyclist paths are separate and far less crowded. In fact, it may be a bit too lonely to run here after dark. After running the bridge loop, add on a tour through Brooklyn Bridge Park to really take in the views of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.
