City Park’s large green expanse close to downtown Denver attracts runners from far and wide. Most people come here for the postcard-worthy scenery of the Denver skyline over a backdrop of the Front Range Mountains. Although it’s not as crowded as Washington Park, you’ll never be lonely here. City Park is a very popular playground for Denver residents that come to use the athletic fields and picnic areas. It is also home to the Denver Zoo and the Museum of Nature and Science. The winding paths that crisscross the park allow you to create runs of varying distances, including a peaceful loop around the lake. Our route takes the perimeter path around the park and the adjacent City Park Golf Course. This short loop is perfect for running mile intervals. The north and south sides of the square are almost exactly a mile long and the east and west sides are about ¾ of a mile. The flat route is a combination of paved sidewalks and dirt trails and enjoys the shade of the park while avoiding some of the crowds within.
