Green Mountain

Running Route

Hard
8.9 mi
2,755 ft
The “go to” run for most Boulderites is a Green Mountain ascent. There are a few different routes to the top of Green, spanning a variety of terrain from loose rubble to giant rock steps. The popular Chautauqua trailhead provides access to several trails and pristine views of the Flatirons. Our recommendation is to take Bear Canyon up, for a relatively easier grade, and descend on Gregory Canyon. Or you can try the reverse loop, depending on what type of suffering you are in the mood for that day. Experienced locals prefer a steep ascent up Amphitheater and Saddle Rock - this route is a hotly contested FKT and segment. If you are visiting from sea level be prepared for a heart-pounding adventure, there is nothing flat or easy about this run. Although Green Mountain is the shortest of Boulder's three 8,000-foot peaks, it remains a favorite due to its close proximity to downtown Boulder. One can dash out their front door and be at the summit within an hour. The journey to the top offers spectacular scenery as you rise out of the grassy fields at Chautauqua and traverse the serene pine forests and rocky technical trails. You will be rewarded at the summit with a panoramic view of the city of Boulder.
