There are two ways to attempt an FKT:
1) the correct way
2) the way that I just did it

Holy moly. It stated out reasonably well, I’ll admit the stairs were a shock to the system (turns out I miss my blackout staircase training!) … my goal was to relax and keep a sustainable pace for the whole climb. 

As soon as you hit the trailhead you feel the heat, somehow the town is much cooler than the mountain … and as soon as you hit the dirt the route finding is quite tricky. Lots of little scrittly trails that criss-cross and seemingly head in every direction except the one you need. Crossed paths with a bulldozer that was moving some earth around so perhaps that had something to do with it.

After the bulldozer I hit some really lovely flowy single track … that unfortunately was NOT the trail I needed to take and it ended up taking me to the very bottom of the arroyo.

THANKFULLY, this is an interpretive FKT route, so I didn’t lose time retracing my steps to the point of error, but climbing out of the gully, on crappy rock, hands over feet … was not the way that I wanted to do it! At this point my HR just kept climbing and climbing.

I contoured the hillside knowing I would eventually reach the ridgeline (that I was supposed to be on) and proceeded to death march my way to the summit, absolutely effin gassed. Got to the cross 7 mins slower than my soft target … took a zombie selfie, dialled up the Boa, turned on my heels and decided to give it some gas, with the trail being much more easy to read from above. The running down is super fun, lots of baby-head-sized rocks and looseness to roll on! I decided going balls to the wall here wasn’t the smartest and again, even descending, route finding was tricky in places, especially where I’d gone wrong with the bulldozer earlier. 
I almost ended up in someone’s backyard with four very angry Chihuahuas … who did try to chase me. Little pendejos. I made it back into town feeling zippy, only to come to a fork and have the GPS glitch out. I took one turn. The GPS said it was the other. I retraced my steps, ready to take the original path down … but back at the fork everything was turned around on the map and it said I’d gone the right way — NOOOOOO — I’m not sure if the buildings or the speed caused the issue, but in that moment I had to make a decision and so I went with my original choice … 100m down fiercely steep stairs I see that I absolutely not on the right road. 

Committed at this point I prayed that all the roads lead roughly to the centre and followed my nose … my navigation app in full freeze mode … gaaaaah. Literally I’m just pounding pavement at this point and hoping for the best. The path hits another fork and begins to climb, and I realise again I’m going the the wrong direction … Komoot still buying out I open Google Maps and see that the Teatro Juarez is just a couple hundred metres behind me. I turn again, give it a kick and and land on the steps with a measly (yet hard earned) four minutes to spare for the FKT.

Notes: I reckon in my current state of fitness (no speed training) 10 minutes off that time is possible with proper route finding. I reckon with some speedwork +15 minutes off the time is doable. Highly recommend doing a recce before attempting this so you don’t make any mistakes I did.
