I was tempted to start this with something catchy like “two FKTs for the price of one,” but I’ll be real with you … it felt more like two for the price of four. The screw ups and subsequent pushes on the opening route emptied the tank, and somehow the time between the two runs when I wanted to rest seemed to evaporate faster than the sweat off my body in the dry mountain air. 

First things first … Scott Gilpin  — dude, what a pair of routes. Two completely different personalities, both equally stunning. The contrast in terrain, style, and general vibe was wild. Proper treats. Thanks for putting these into the world.

Back to La Bufa, the stairs out of town were a full-body reminder that I had very little to give but that actually pressed me into a steady rhythm that I’m not sure I would have found otherwise … then came the steep trail. Normally, this is my jam — the kind of terrain I’d happily skip through with fresh legs. Not the case today. The grind life is real.

I made the summit behind what I’d planned but still with some leeway. And I took a hot second to soak it in. I’m not playing folks, it’s unreal up there. Could’ve stayed up there all afternoon. 
[Worth noting: the FKT GPX track stops short of the summit cross, but the written description clearly says run to the cross. I went to the cross. Obvs. Scott, would love your take on that GPX mismatch.]

The descent is where I coulda should woulda felt like myself again. Steep, fast, technical — fully my style. I genuinely think I could halve my descent time if I had gas in the tank. today reality came knocking: about a third of the way down I felt the early twinges of cramp in my hammies. Two-thirds down, approaching town, the threat shifted into my quads and I had a little internal “oh absolutely not” moment. I backed off just enough, trying to preserve what was left, and prayed I wouldn’t end my day twitching on the cobblestones in front of a couple thousand tourists. Missing the FKT is one thing; folding in public is a different flavour of shite.

In the end: these mountains are top notch and the climbing looks decent. I’ll be back, no question. This whole region feels alive and I’m not ashamed to say I was kind of caught off guard. Even in such a quick visit, the city, the landscape, the vibe … all of it puts proper spring in my step.
