Back out for a ride

Maybe there’s something to the whole heat acclimation thing? It was already 82 degrees at 8a, with a pile of humidity. Blech. But, it actually felt pretty good, as long as the sun was behind the clouds. The wind started picking up too, which was nice, except for riding straight into in. My brain wanted to ride  a longer ride today, but with the heat and a cooler day tomorrow, it changed it’s mind and I just did an easy ride. 

I was trying to keep the effort medium and not overcook myself. I succeeded for the most part, but I burned the match down a little too far climbing up Ossenfort and it took a while to recover.  While the temp kept rising on Señor Garmin, the clouds kept it pleasantly warm. The sun broke free while I waited for the light at old Manchester/109 and woooo-eeee it was hot! After starting back up, the sun went back behind the clouds. 

I wanted to stop at Wildwood park to refill the water bottle. I could finish the ride with what I had, but it was quite warm. Why not have more than enough and drink as much as I wanted? So I headed across the bridge and who did I see? Gary 'Carbr8r' Rundblad coming the other way! It was fun to stop and chat for a bit. He was still heading out and I was heading homeward’ish. Drink lots of water!

The ride home was pretty uneventful, until I motored it down the bottom of Shepard. With the tailwind, I wanted to at least set a PR. 3/4 of the way into the segment, my chain skipped strangely. I powered on and finished the segment, turned around at Strecker and shifted gears to spin out the effort. It shifted ok at first, but wouldn’t go all the way up. Then it shifted even worse. I stopped in a subdivision and tried shifting it again… crack. Sigh… that’s the end of that cable. 

With the chain down at the smallest sprocket and the climb up Orrville between me and home, I made the call of shame. Maybe I could have made it up the hill, but with a ride five minutes away, I decided to enjoy sitting in the shady breeze. 

So now I have another thing to do today… install new cable and dial in the derailleur. 

All I want to do right now tho, is take a nap.
